Illinois College welcomes new director of nursing, strengthening pathways for future healthcare leaders

Illinois College has appointed Amanda Schuster, PhD, RN, as director of nursing, bringing experienced leadership to a growing program with a 100% placement rate, preparing students for high-impact careers in healthcare.

Her appointment comes as the College expands its investment in career-ready learning to meet the rising demand for skilled nurses in our region.  With newly renovated nursing facilities, including advanced simulation labs and collaborative clinical learning spaces, IC offers students the opportunity to begin hands-on training early and build confidence before entering the field.

“At Illinois College, our focus is on preparing students not just to graduate, but to make an immediate impact in their professions,” said Dean of Faculty Dane Wendell. “Amanda brings a strong record as a nurse educator and program leader, with a clear focus on student learning and clinical readiness. We’re looking forward to the leadership and consistency she will bring to the nursing program.”

For prospective students, her leadership signals continued momentum in a program built on personalized attention, experiential learning, and strong clinical preparation. Illinois College nursing students benefit from direct admission to the program, the potential for free tuition and early access to skills training in advanced simulation labs. They gain experience across multiple specialities to ensure they Graduate READY to launch their career. 

Schuster earned her Ph.D. in Nursing Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 2024, along with a Master of Science in Nursing from Fort Hays State University and bachelor’s degrees in nursing and biology. Her academic work and leadership roles have centered on strengthening curriculum, aligning programs with national standards, and supporting student success — all priorities that align with Illinois College’s commitment to preparing graduates for meaningful careers.

A registered nurse in Kansas, Schuster brings a strong background in nursing education, clinical instruction, and academic program leadership. She most recently served at Baker University’s School of Nursing and previously taught at Benedictine College. Earlier in her career, she practiced in acute care as a surgical intensive care nurse and relief charge nurse at the University of Kansas Hospital, experiences that continue to shape her approach to preparing students for real-world clinical environments. She joins the exceptional faculty currently teaching, mentoring and coaching in nursing at Illinois College.

Through programs like Advantage Plus, Illinois College ensures that students Graduate READY, equipped with the knowledge, experience and professional skills needed to succeed in competitive healthcare environments. Additionally, nursing students may qualify for full-tuition scholarships through the College’s partnership with Memorial Health. Under Schuster’s leadership, the nursing program will continue to emphasize hands-on learning across many specializations, clear pathways to licensure and building community that helps students thrive.
