Illinois College Rises into Top 10 for Social Mobility Nationwide

9.23.2025

Illinois College has earned a place among the top 10 colleges in the country, according to the latest US News & World Report rankings. Rising to 9th in the nation for social mobility, IC’s recognition reflects the College’s long-standing vision to inspire achievement and empower students to make a difference in the world.

In higher education, social mobility measures a college’s ability to elevate students’ socioeconomic status through opportunities, support, and degree completion. According to U.S. News, social mobility rankings assess how well colleges graduate students, particularly those with limited financial means, measuring both graduation rates and performance compared to peers.

Illinois College’s ascent into the top 10 underscores its strong trajectory in nationally recognized outcomes. The College’s Advantage Plus program, which ensures substantial scholarships and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for qualified Illinois residents, reinforces IC's dedication to affordability. Alongside its reaffirmed accreditation, IC continues to demonstrate excellence in preparing students to Graduate READY and make a difference in their communities and careers.

“Breaking into the top 10 for social mobility is a tremendous recognition of Illinois College’s mission,” said President Barbara A. Farley. “This achievement reflects our commitment to ensuring that students graduate confident and capable. When we say they will Graduate READY, we mean it.”

For Illinois College, this ranking affirms what generations of alumni already know: that an IC education opens doors, transforms futures, builds relationships, and creates lasting success. A college degree remains one of the most powerful investments a family can make. National research repeatedly shows that college graduates earn significantly more over their lifetime, experience lower unemployment rates, and enjoy greater career flexibility. Illinois College’s strong community of support and focus on hands-on learning through internships support long-term financial stability and upward mobility.

The College’s nearly 200-year history is marked by opportunity, innovation, and a deep commitment to student success by turning access into success. For families and friends considering college options, this ranking offers assurance: recommending Illinois College means recommending a proven pathway to opportunity.
