Senior art exhibits highlight vibrant program

4.18.2018

The first of two senior art exhibits is on display this week in Woodcock Gallery in McGaw Fine Arts Center. Cody Thomas ’18 is presenting his work in “Qualm,” an exhibit that incorporates both his engagement in sociology and his commitment to the planet.

Thomas says that the Illinois College Art Department has made a big impact on him, although the value of the art program at IC often gets overlooked.

"The art program that Matt and Jeff created here at Illinois College has provided me with experiences that I could not get from any other department," said Thomas, referring to Jeff Garland, associate professor of art, and Matthew Mogle, assistant professor of art.

Garland said that Thomas’ work demands attention and allows space for reflection.

“His (Thomas’) care and concern for the animal kingdom and all that inhabit Earth is on full display at the Woodcock Gallery in McGaw. This show will challenge your role on this planet and provide you with plenty to think about after viewing his body of work,” he said.

Thomas is a double major in sociology and art. The prolific body of work he has created over the last two years includes paintings, sculptures, trinkets and conceptual work.

Cody Thomas’ show "Qualms" will be open from April 13 to April 19. The second senior art exhibit, “Slate” by Austin Buchanan '18 opens April 20 with a reception from 5-7 p.m. That exhibit will be open through April 26.
