IC to hold first virtual homecoming celebration

9.07.2020

Illinois College announced Monday that the Homecoming 2020 will go forward with virtual events for alumni during Homecoming Week, September 28 through October 3.

Stephanie Chipman, vice president of external relations, said alumni will be missed on campus during Homecoming 2020, but the College hopes to plan an in-person celebration in April if the state reaches Phase 5 of the Restore Illinois plan.

In accordance with state of Illinois restrictions on the size of groups that can gather together and as part of its Hilltop READY plan announced in July, the College is continuing to limit visitors to campus during the pandemic in order to protect the safety of students, faculty and staff, and focus on the student-centered education IC is known for.

“By reimagining Homecoming traditions, we will still be able to bring the Illinois College campus and alumni communities together this fall,” she said. “We are finding new ways to preserve IC’s traditions while continuing the work of keeping the campus Hilltop READY.”

She adds that the Office of Development and Alumni Relations is collaborating with IC’s Alumni Association Board of Directors and departments across campus to capture the spirit of Homecoming, which typically draws hundreds of IC alumni from across the country to participate in athletic events, reunions and the annual parade.

A schedule of virtual Homecoming events, including special recognitions of the Class of 1970 and the Class of 2020 will soon be made available.
