Kalli Avera '25
Kalli Avera ’25 always knew she wanted to work in mental health, but it wasn’t until Illinois College launched a concentration in alcohol and drug counseling that her path became crystal clear. Now, she’s headed into the field with 560 hours of clinical internship under her belt and plans to become a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC).

“This concentration has been an incredible hands-on experience. I’ve basically been doing what I’m going to do for a living,” says Avera.
Through internships at Gateway in Jacksonville and Springfield, Avera worked in both all-male and co-ed settings, gaining practical skills in a field where trust and connection are essential. The hours counted toward her major and certification, giving her a head start many professionals don’t get until after college.
Her clinical training was complemented by research through the IC Scholars Honors Program. Avera designed and conducted a student survey project with support from her neuroscience professor, which she presented at the Celebration of Excellence.
IC also gave her more than just academic preparation. “This program was so tailored to what I want to do,” she explains. “It set me up to go straight into the workforce, and I feel confident doing it.”
She’s now employed as an Engagement Specialist at Locust Street Resource Center, a not-for-profit comprehensive behavioral health center near her hometown—a relationship she’s been building for over a year.
“Without Illinois College, I’d be at least a year behind in getting certified,” Avera says. “Here, I was able to learn, train, and grow all at once. I’m more than ready.”
