Student nets performer of the week honor

10.05.2017

The Midwest Conference announced Ashley Sholmire '18 as the MWC's Offensive Performer of the Week for women's soccer on Monday. Sholmire had five goals in two matches last week as Illinois College split a pair of matches.

After scoring twice in a 3-1 win over Lawrence University last Sunday to become Illinois College's all-time leader in goals and points, Sholmire continued her torrid offensive play with a hat trick on Tuesday in a 5-0 defeat of Blackburn College. Sholmire had the first three goals of the match, scoring in the 17th, 49th and 60th minutes to break the game open.

On Saturday, Sholmire found the back of the net twice in a 7-3 loss to Grinnell. The senior accounted for the second and third Illinois College goals of the day, scoring in the 45th minute and then getting one-on-one with the keeper and beating her for the second goal in the 62nd minute.

With seven goals in her last three outings, Sholmire has catapulted into a tie for the MWC lead in goals scored this season with nine. The nine goals also matches her career high for a single season and she has 34 for her career.

The next chance for Sholmire and the Lady Blues to keep the offense rolling comes on Oct. 7 with a 1 p.m. match on the road at Monmouth College. IC returns home on Oct. 10 for its final non-conference match of the season against Illinois Wesleyan at 7 p.m.
