Master’s of Cybersecurity | Southeast Missouri State University
Freddie Alvarez ’26 says one of the most valuable parts of his Illinois College experience was the support he received from faculty mentors.
“Dr. Takako Soma really cared about helping students figure out their goals,” Alvarez said.
After graduating with a degree in computer science, Alvarez plans to continue his education at Southeast Missouri State University pursuing graduate studies in cybersecurity.
At IC, Alvarez balanced academics with collegiate football while developing technical skills and professional confidence.
“The computer science program gave me a strong foundation for what I want to do moving forward,” he said.
Alvarez credits faculty support and tutoring resources with helping him navigate challenging coursework and discover a career path that matched his interests.
“Coding could be difficult at times, but the professors and tutors always helped us work through problems,” he said.
As a student-athlete, Alvarez also learned the importance of time management, discipline and teamwork.
“Football taught me how to stay organized and push through challenges,” he said.
He says programs such as TRIO and campus advising resources also helped him feel supported throughout his college experience.
“At IC, people genuinely want you to succeed,” Alvarez said.
Looking ahead, he says Illinois College prepared him academically and personally for the next step.
