Rylee Dodd '26
Continuing education at Worsham College of Mortuary Science
Rylee Dodd ’26 didn’t originally expect to pursue a career in mortuary science, but after gaining hands-on experience through local funeral home connections and mentorship opportunities, she discovered a path that felt meaningful and rewarding.
After graduating with a biology degree from Illinois College, Dodd plans to attend Worsham College of Mortuary Science. Originally, Dodd gravitated towards forensic science and healthcare, but after conversations with mentors and gaining hands-on experience, she realized mortuary science was the path she wanted to take.
“I love science and helping people,” she said. “Pursuing a career in mortuary science felt like the right balance for me.”
Through connections facilitated at Illinois College, Dodd gained experience working at Williamson Funeral Home with Illinois College Board of Trustees member Gregory C. May '88 and his son Ryan May '19.
Outside of academics, Dodd participated in the dance team, Student Senate and supplemental instruction opportunities. She credits professors and mentors, including Associate Professor of Biology Paul Hamilton and career development staff, with helping her navigate an unconventional career path.
Looking ahead, Dodd says Illinois College helped her become more confident in her direction and abilities. “I feel Graduate READY because I’ve already had practical experience, mentorship and support that helped me discover the right path for me,” she said.
