MUSIC AUDITIONS & SCHOLARSHIPS

 
Students must audition to be admitted as a Music major or minor.  However, all students are invited to audition for Music Scholarships.  Some scholarships are reserved for Music majors and minors, others are available for any student who participates in the Music Department, regardless of major.  In order to receive a scholarship, students should first apply to the college, then audition through the Music Department.


 
Tier 1 - Emerging Artist Scholarship - $40,000 over four years
  •  $10,000 per year for students with the intent of majoring in Music
  • Recipients must maintain their intent to major in Music, must formally declare a major in Music by the conclusion of their sophomore year, and must participate in an ensemble each semester.
Tier 2 - Talent Scholarship - $20,000 over four years
  •  $5,000 per year for students with the intent of majoring or minoring in Music
  • Recipients must maintain their intent to major or minor in Music, must formally declare a major or minor in Music by the conclusion of their sophomore year, and must participate in an ensemble each semester.
Tier 3 - Music Award - $2000 to $4000 over four years
  • $500 or $1000 awards for any student participating in music, regardless of major.
  • Students may audition and obtain Music Awards after the February audition deadline.
  • Recipients need not be a Music major or minor, but must participate in an ensemble each semester.
Tier 4 - Music Lesson Fee Waiver
  • Note: the music lesson fee is already waived for Music majors and minors
  • Lesson Fee Waivers are available to a student of any major who wishes to pursue private study in voice or an instrument.
  • Students receiving a Music Lesson Fee Waiver must also participate in an ensemble each semester
 
 
AUDITION DAYS AND DEADLINES:
Please note:  students should apply to the college before auditioning, AND complete the online form for Music Auditions according to the deadlines.
 
Students must audition by March 6, 2015 in order to be considered for an Emerging Artist or Talent Scholarship for the 2014 Fall semester.  Music Awards and Lesson Fee Waivers can be awarded at later dates.   Please complete the online form as early as possible before your chosen audition date, and at least ONE WEEK BEFORE the date you plan to audition.  See below for specific requirements for each instrument. 
 
Upcoming audition days:
 
Tuesday, November 11, 2014 please complete the online form by Oct 31.
 
Saturday, January 31, 2015 please complete the online form by Jan 22.

Monday, February 16, 2015 please complete the online form by Feb 6.

Friday, March 6, 2015 please complete the online form by Feb 20.

Friday, March 20, 2015 please complete the online form by Mar 6.
(NOTE: performers on this date are NOT eligible for top awards, and are only eligible for Tier 3 & 4 awards  
 
**Please make every effort to audition on one of these days.  If you are unable to audition during one of these days, indicate so on the online form.  After you complete the online form, you will be contacted by the Music Department to schedule an audition.  Or, you may email music@ic.edu to inquire about other audition times.
 
If your are unable to audition before March 7, 2015, you will be ineligible for top tier awards. 
 
Out-of-state residents may audition by recording.  Contact abby.musgrove@ic.edu for more information.
 

   
VOCALISTS:

- Complete the Music Auditions Online Form and submit before the deadline (above)
 
- Prepare two selections:  one aria or art song and one other selection of your choice.  Selections should be memorized.  Each selection must be under five minutes in length.  An accompanist will be provided if needed.
 
- Sight-sing two or three simple melodies or complete a tonal memory exercise (note: preference will be given to students who can read music, but awards are not contingent upon sight-reading skill)
 
- Complete a short interview with music faculty
 
***ALL CANDIDATES - Bring at least 3 copies of each selection to your audition.  Bring original copies if possible, but photocopies are acceptable.

 
 
INSTRUMENTALISTS:
 
- Complete the Music Auditions Online Form and submit before the deadline (above)
 
- Prepare two selections:  these may be etudes, solo works, or excerpts, but please choose two pieces of contrasting style.  Selections need not be memorized.  Each selection must be under five minutes in length.  An accompanist will be provided if needed.
 
- Play two or three major scales, two octaves up and down (scales will be chosen from key signatures up to four flats or sharps for your instrument).
 
- Complete a short interview with music faculty

***ALL CANDIDATES - Bring at least 3 copies of each selection to your audition.  Bring original copies if possible, but photocopies are acceptable.

 
COMPOSERS:
 
- Complete the Music Auditions Online Form and submit before the deadline (above)
 
- Audition on a major instrument or voice - see above procedures
 
- Submit one to three scores with or without recordings (MIDI acceptable). Scores may be e-mailed as PDFs to timothy.kramer@mail.ic.edu or sent via mail to Timothy Kramer, Department of Music, Illinois College, 1101 W. College Ave., Jacksonville, IL 62650.  Observe the deadlines for instrument or voice auditions when submitting scores.
 
- Compete a short interview with music faculty
