Springtime success for athletics
Illinois College athletics celebrated one of the most successful spring seasons in recent memory, with conference championships, national recognition and historic milestones highlighting a year of momentum across the Hilltop. From NCAA postseason victories to record-setting performances and the launch of a brand-new program, Blueboys and Lady Blues student-athletes continued to raise the standard for excellence in competition.
Leading the way was the Illinois College softball team, which authored one of the most accomplished seasons in program history. The Lady Blues set a new school record with 34 wins while capturing both the Midwest Conference regular season and postseason tournament championships. The conference titles marked another significant step forward for a program that has established itself as one of the Midwest Conference’s premier contenders in recent years.
The postseason run carried Illinois College back to the NCAA Regionals for the third time in school history, where the Lady Blues added another historic achievement with a victory over Capital University. The win marked just the second NCAA postseason victory in program history and further demonstrated the program’s continued growth on the national stage.
Senior pitcher Jordan Closs ’26 was recognized as the Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Year, continuing a remarkable streak of dominance for the program. Illinois College players have now earned the conference’s Pitcher of the Year honor in five consecutive seasons, underscoring the sustained excellence and depth within the Lady Blues pitching staff.
On the track, the men’s outdoor track and field team delivered a breakthrough season by winning the Midwest Conference Outdoor Championship for the first time in program history. The historic conference title represented the culmination of years of program growth and development, as the Blueboys combined strong performances across events to secure the championship.
The season also included national success for senior Melvin Hodge ’26, who earned First Team All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Hodge placed seventh nationally in the hammer throw, becoming one of the top performers in Division III and adding another prestigious achievement to Illinois College’s track and field history.
The women’s outdoor track and field team also enjoyed an impressive championship season, finishing second at the Midwest Conference Outdoor Championships behind a collection of standout individual performances. Riley Gardner ’29 capped her season with First Team All-American honors in the high jump after tying for fourth place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Competing against the top athletes in Division III, Gardner’s performance placed her among the nation’s elite and continued Illinois College’s strong tradition of success in the field events.
This spring also marked the beginning of a new era for Illinois College athletics with the debut of Lady Blues flag football. In its inaugural season, the program quickly established itself as a competitive presence, finishing with a 4-4 overall record while building excitement around one of the nation’s fastest-growing collegiate sports.
Among the highlights of the season was the program’s first-ever victory, which came at Halas Hall, the practice facility of the Chicago Bears. The milestone moment provided an unforgettable experience for the student-athletes and helped introduce a new tradition on the Hilltop as Illinois College expanded athletic opportunities for women.
Additional postseason success came from the baseball and men’s tennis programs, both of which continued to build momentum within the Midwest Conference.
Men’s baseball finished second in both the Midwest Conference regular season standings and the postseason tournament, putting together another highly competitive year. Throughout the spring, the team remained in conference title contention while continuing to establish itself as a consistent postseason presence.
Men’s tennis also reached the Midwest Conference postseason tournament for the second consecutive season and only the second time in program history. The continued success reflected the program’s steady growth and the commitment of student-athletes and coaches to elevating the program’s competitive standing within the conference.
Across every program, the accomplishments of the spring season reflected more than wins and championships. Illinois College student athletes continued to excel while balancing the demands of academics, leadership and campus involvement, embodying the College’s commitment to preparing students to Graduate READY for success beyond the Hilltop.
