Led by Hitchcock Professor of Biology Lawrence Zettler, Illinois College played a key role in the award-winning exhibit, contributing research expertise, exhibit preparation, and conservation outreach efforts. Students Sydni Maggart ’27 and Jena Sellers ’26 joined researchers and conservation partners from around the world, gaining firsthand experience working alongside leading botanical institutions and scientists.

The exhibit, “The Orchids of China – Beauty & Conservation,” showcased rare orchid species while highlighting the importance of conservation efforts to protect one of the world’s most endangered plant families.

Participation in the Chelsea Flower Show continues to provide Illinois College students with unique opportunities to engage in international research and conservation work. During the trip, students visited the Essex Wildlife Trust to study native British orchids, an experience that has already inspired ideas for future research projects.

The recognition marks the second consecutive Gold Medal for the Orchid Conservation Chelsea collaboration and further strengthens Illinois College’s reputation for providing students with meaningful undergraduate research experiences that have global impact.
