IC teams mark historic seasons for men's basketball, softball

Illinois College Athletics celebrated another year of great success during the spring sports seasons, with softball and men’s track and field highlighting the spring with NCAA postseason appearances. Fall sports kicked off 2022-2023 with multiple standout performances.

Blueboys Basketball rewrites record book with historic season

The Illinois College men’s basketball team put together one of the most successful seasons in IC sports history. The Blueboys finished the year with an overall record of 25-3 and a conference record of 15-1.

The Blueboys earned the most wins ever recorded in a single season in their program’s history and broke countless records along the way. The team posted the most three-pointers ever made in a season with 238, the most rebounds with 1,155 and the most blocks with 126. Their 16-game winning streak is also the longest streak
recorded in program history.

Buzz Ritzel ’25 and Tre Rogers ’23 were both awarded First Team All-Conference, while Jake Mazrimas ’23 and Nestor Daboin ’24 were named Second Team All-Conference. The team was led by fifth-year head coach Steve Schweer who received Coach of the Year from the Midwest Conference and was also named the Region 9 Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com.

The team capped off the season winning the Midwest Conference regular season title for the first time in program history. IC hosted the MWC Tournament and defeated Cornell College in the championship game to claim their first tournament title since 2003. This gave them an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament for just the second time in program history.

IC wrapped up their historic season in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament, falling to Wheaton College. After all their accomplishments and broken records, it is safe to say that the 2022-23 Blueboys basketball team will be remembered as one of the most extraordinary teams in Illinois College athletics history.

Head coach Meghan Roman leads Lady Blues Softball to MWC Championship in her final season

Illinois College athletics announced that Meghan Roman will step down as the head coach of the Lady Blues softball team after an 11-year head coaching career. Roman will continue her role as director of athletics for the College.

Roman ends her coaching career as the most successful coach in IC softball history with an overall record of 211-164. She led the Lady Blues to two NCAA tournament appearances and their first NCAA tournament victory in the 2022 season. Under her leadership, the Lady Blues earned two regular-season Midwest
Conference titles and one MWC tournament title. She was also named MWC Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2021.

During the 2023 season, the Lady Blues continued their tradition of success being named MWC regular season co-champions with Grinnell College. The Lady Blues hosted the MWC tournament and fell just short of another NCAA tournament appearance after suffering a loss to Grinnell in the championship game. The team finished the year with an overall record of 25-16-1. Julia Drake ’24 was named MWC Pitcher of the Year and received First Team All-Region. IC had six student-athletes receive All-Conference honors
