Purpose, Passion, & Philanthropy ignites the power of women in giving

Illinois College recently launched a new initiative, Purpose, Passion & Philanthropy, to focus on the power of women as philanthropic change agents.

The inaugural luncheon brought together about 70 women, each interested in learning more about giving opportunities and how they could best support those causes important to them.

Jenny Norris Peterson delivered an impactful keynote presentation entitled, “Women Leading, Women Giving: Unleashing the Power and Potential to Change Our World.” Her energizing speech garnered a standing ovation and set the tone for the inspiring new campaign.

Peterson is a Jacksonville native who works as a philanthropy consultant in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she advises not-for-profits and families. Woven throughout her presentation were moving stories of influential women who have left their mark on the world with their giving, including her mother Louise Norris Bone and Helen Patterson Hinde ’45, both dedicated supporters of Illinois College among other causes throughout their lives.

“My hope is to inform women so they will feel empowered to find their passions and give strategically to causes that they feel deeply about. Together we can make the world a better place for future generations.”

President Barbara A. Farley said she considers Purpose, Passion & Philanthropy to be a long-term initiative that will celebrate and embrace the role of Illinois College women as stewards of the College’s future.

“There are so many examples of dynamic women who have helped shape Illinois College,” said President Farley. “They have set a wonderful example by providing scholarships to make IC more affordable and helping us to achieve excellence in academics, athletics and campus life. This initiative is inspired by their work and continues their vision for Illinois College.”

An advisory council made up of notable members of the Illinois College community will provide guidance and leadership to Purpose, Passion & Philanthropy. Members chosen for this honor are Joy French Becker ’67, Sandra Stallings Bellatti ’70, Jane Jondro Brownback ’72, Marcy Bramley Burrus ’71, Elaine Chapman, Janet Williams Chipman ’75, Jill Kinnett, Ellen Rammelkamp Miller ’72, Kathy Quinn Strawn ’72 and Suzanne Hartman Verticchio ’67

All women who are alumni, parents of students and graduates, and friends of the College are invited to be a part of Purpose, Passion & Philanthropy and attend its meetings throughout the year. Upcoming events will offer participants a relaxed, supportive environment to learn more about a range of topics such as setting up charitable trusts, thinking strategically about giving, and discovering what is unique about women in giving.
