Summary
The Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will assist the Director in providing support to traditionally underrepresented students through diverse programming and services. The Assistant Director will foster cultural awareness and aid in the promotion of a safe, supportive, and inclusive campus that celebrates and respects diversity. The Assistant Director will work directly with students and student organizations as they explore their identities related to race, ethnicity, gender identity, gender expression, sexuality, religion, and other aspects of their personhood. The Assistant Director will assist with the orientation, retention, leadership development, advising, and support for students of color and other marginalized groups as well as collaborate with academics, admission, athletics, development and alumni services, and other student support offices to create strong cultural competencies for all members of the campus community. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following list of duties is meant to be representative of the work performed in this position. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical extension of position responsibilities.

  • Assist the Director with planning and facilitating campus-wide programming, education, and advocacy related to issues of diversity and inclusion
  • Advise and assist student organizations associated with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, such as Black Student Union, Nuestra Casa, Spectrum, Students for Sexual and Gender Equality, and Coalition for Ethnic Awareness
  • Coach students in their social, leadership, academic, and identity development and advocate for their holistic well-being
  • Attend and assist in the implementation of programming for students, including some evenings and weekends
  • Work directly and in partnership with other campus offices to provide support to underrepresented students and promote a diverse and inclusive campus
  • Provide support as necessary for religious life and interfaith programs and initiatives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Experience working with diverse student populations required; relevant experience in higher education strongly preferred.  
  • Demonstrated success in developing programs and services that promote success and support for students of color and other underrepresented groups
  • Ability to work flexible hours required to supervise and facilitate evening and weekend programs and events
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and intercultural communication skills 
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred
  • An understanding of issues facing contemporary higher education and capacity to engage the culture of a Midwestern, residential, liberal arts college
