Art

The courses in the Department of Art and Design in Visual Studies foster a development of techniques and theory in the visual arts through a rigorous curriculum focused on problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.

A major in Art and Design in Visual Studies consists of 7 required courses and 3 electives (40 earned credits) and must include the following courses:

  • AR 100 Two-Dimensional Design Aesthetics
  • AR 131 Visual Perceptions through Drawing
  • AR 102 Western Art and Culture or AR245 Art History in the Modern World
  • AR 204 Visual Communication
  • AR 342 Medium Development, Experimentation, and Innovation
  • AR 346 Theories and Philosophies in Contemporary Art and Culture
  • AR 402 Senior Seminar. In addition, a senior exhibition of original work or a research paper in art-history is required during the senior year.

Electives: AR 102 Western Art and Culture, AR123 Spatial Understanding in 3-D Design, AR242 Oil Painting Process and Theory, AR205 Computer Aided Design and Production, AR245 Art History in the Modern World, AR331 Advanced Drawing Theory and Practice, AR340 Contemporary Theories in Color.

A minor in Art and Design in Visual Studies consists of 3 required courses and 2 electives (20 earned credits) in art and/or art history. A minor must include the following courses:

  • AR 100 Two-Dimensional Design Aesthetics
  • AR 131 Visual Perceptions through Drawing
  • One of the following courses in Art History: AR 102 Western Art and Culture; AR 245 Art History in the Modern World; or AR 346 Theories and Philosophies in Contemporary Art and Culture.

Electives should be selected from the above list for majors.
