What is distinctive about an art major at Illinois College?

The art major at Illinois College is designed to develop excellence in techniques of the visual arts and expression of original ideas. Equipped with these tools, students can work towards the understanding and appreciation of world art in its historical development. With courses ranging from drawing, painting and sculpting to contemporary art and art education, the program appeals to a wide variety of artists.

What opportunities are available for students?

The distinctive Illinois College BreakAway program finds opportunities for students to experience different cultures, environments, and ideas through short-term, experiential learning trips. Participation in a BreakAway will deepen students’ classroom experiences while taking them on an unforgettable journey. The faculty in the art department have led trips to Florence, Italy and London, England .

Internship opportunities exist throughout an art major’s college career. Recent placements have included those with local photographers and the Illinois State Museum Research and Collections Center. A student’s faculty advisor and the Career Center, located in Baxter Hall, are Illinois College’s main resources for matching a student’s interest with their field study or internship.

Other opportunities include group drawing sessions, art film nights, trips to art museums in St. Louis and Chicago, and student art shows on campus as well as off campus.

What opportunities are available after graduation?

Students in the art department are well equipped for graduate school and the job market after completing their careers at Illinois College. In addition to a wide variety of graduate schools, students have taken jobs in museums, education, education administration, and public service.

High Art to Graffiti: Bridging the Gap
High Art to Graffiti: Bridging the GapBridging the Gap is an exhibition aiming to show those artists which are influenced by street art as well as by classical painting.

Focusing on the work of Edison Ilan, Cristan "SMEAR" Gheorghiu, Doty Doty, and Bart Powers. The exhibition directly shows how alternative methods spark interest and rival convention.

As an online exhibition, Bridging the Gap maintains the ability to meet the public in their own homes, work spaces, and environments, much like street art integrates into our everyday lives. These artists truly do possess the qualities necessary to close the gap between what is viewed as high art and the very human public works found in communities the world over.
