Joe Patterson Smith Lecture features award-winning sociologist, historian


An award-winning sociologist, historian and best-selling author James Loewen will speak to the Illinois College community on Monday, March 11, at 8 p.m. in Kirby Learning Center, Room 6 as part of the annual Joe Patterson Smith Lecture. Loewen will talk about “The Most Important Era in U.S. History that You Never Heard Of, and Why It’s Important Today.”

Loewen is the author of the best-selling Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your History Textbook Got Wrong and Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism. He spent 20 years teaching race relations at the University of Vermont and now lives in Washington, D.C., continuing his research on how Americans remember their past.

Loewen has been an expert witness in more than 50 civil rights, voting rights and employment cases. His awards include the First Annual Spivack Award of the American Sociological Association for sociological research applied to the field of intergroup relations, the American Book Award (Lies My Teacher Told Me), and the Oliver Cromwell Cox Award for Distinguished Anti-Racist Scholarship. He is also a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians, Visiting Professor of Sociology at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and Visiting Professor of African-American Studies at the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign. In 2012 the American Sociological Association gave Loewen its Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award, for “scholarship in service to social justice.”
