Community Engagement and Service
	Service to our communities is at the heart of an Illinois College education. In a typical year, more than 90 percent of our students spend a total of over 11,000 hours as volunteers. For years, the college has been honored to be named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Service-learning courses combine experiential learning and community needs. Students gain first-hand experience within their disciplines while learning they can have a positive role in their communities using the knowledge they gain at Illinois College.   Our community engagement programs provide students with many choices of ways in which to put their skills and passions to work for others. As they do so, students gain real-world experience that helps them shape and launch their professional lives. We take great pride in providing our students with the resources to become engaged and active members in society.

	2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll
	Illinois College joined a select group of the nation’s colleges and universities by earning a place on the 2012 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its strong commitment to community service.   In releasing an in-depth report of community service programs at college and university campuses nationwide, the Corporation for National and Community Service praised Illinois College for achieving Honor Roll status. The Honor Roll serves as the highest form of federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement. As a result of the 2012 report, Illinois College is the only downstate Illinois college to earn Honor Roll status during each of the six years since the inception of the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

	One of America's Top Ranked Colleges :: Kaplan/Newsweek
	The Newsweek College Rankings are tailored to address the real concerns of parents and prospective students. Given Illinois College's history, its rank as number twelve on Newsweek list of Best Schools for Service is not surprising.* Founded in 1829, the school's first president was Edward Beecher, the brother of Uncle Tom's Cabin author Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was a center of the abolitionist movement and two campus houses were reportedly stops along the Underground Railroad. Ninety percent of students volunteer in community-service projects each year and the school has ranked among the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for several years. The Jacksonville, Illinois, campus is home to only some 1,000 undergrads, but its endowment is so substantial that it ranks among the top seven percent of colleges and universities nationwide. The college cites its endowment as one of its major strengths, noting that it affords a remarkably low cost.
