Community members invited to audition for spring musical
Illinois College TheatreWorks invites community performers to audition next month for specific roles in the college’s upcoming spring musical. Auditions for the Tony Award-winning musical, “Hairspray,” will be held November 17 and 18 on the campus of the liberal arts college in Jacksonville.

Based on the 1988 John Waters-directed film starring Ricki Lake, the stage version of “Hairspray” follows the story of boisterous Tracy Turnblad who dreams of dancing on the hit television program, “The Corny Collins Show,” in 1960s Baltimore. When her African-American friends help her win a place on the show, she discovers there are darker forces working to keep her and her new friends from experiencing all the privileges that white, beautiful and thin people enjoy.

Community members will be considered for the following roles: Edna Turnblad, Velma Von Tussle, Little Inez, Motormouth Maybelle, Wilbur Turnblad, Prudy Pingleton, Mr. Pinky, Harriman F. Spritzer and Gym Teacher/Matron. In addition, high school and college age African-American singers and dancers are urged to audition for the musical.

Auditions on Thursday, November 17, and Friday, November 18, will consist of two parts: a vocal audition located in Room 112 of the McGaw Fine Arts Center, and a dance audition in the Wilson Multipurpose Room of the Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center. Singing auditions take place both nights from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., while dance auditions will be held both nights from 8 until 10:30 p.m. Both auditions are required to be considered for a role in the musical, even if only auditioning for a speaking role.

Those auditioning are asked to sing 16 measures of a song from a musical other than “Hairspray” during the vocal auditions. A short dance combination will be taught to those auditioning by the show’s choreographer. Sign-ups for a four-minute vocal audition time slot and a small group dance time slot are posted in the lobby of the McGaw Fine Arts Center, or call 217.245.3451 to arrange a time. Callbacks will be held on Saturday, November 19, from 3 to 7 p.m. in Sibert Theatre of the McGaw Fine Arts Center.

“Hairspray” will be performed in McGaw Fine Arts Center’s Sibert Theatre March 24, 25, 29, 30, 31 and April 1, 2012. Rehearsals are scheduled to being mid-January, 2012. Call the Illinois College TheatreWorks box office at 217.245.3471 or visit http://www.ic.edu/theatre for ticket information.
