Welcome to the Illinois College Department of Theatre!
What is distinctive about a theatre major at Illinois College?
What can I do with a Theatre major?
The theatre department at Illinois College is dedicated to teaching students to develop skills they need to enter the
professional theatre and the 21st-century workforce at large: creative problem-solving, leadership, collaboration, strong communication skills, critical thinking, and integrity. The department also encourages students to develop their craft through a program of coursework and guided experience in acting, design, directing, playwriting, management, theatre history, and the use of technologies most common in theatre. Practical, hands-on experience in TheatreWorks productions allows them to put their knowledge into practice and to showcase their work for the larger community. We encourage students to pursue their passion, deepening their own humanity and enlivening those around them through the diverse and powerful world of theatre.
What opportunities are available for students?
TheatreWorks offers many opportunities for students with a wide variety of theatrical interests. From staffing the box office, to publicity to house and stage management, to costume design and construction, to makeup artistry, to working on the set and lights, students are able to participate in all areas for pay, academic credit, and joy. We produce two or three main-stage shows and a collection of student-directed one-acts each year. Our main stage, Sibert Theatre, is a 250-seat house, and the Illinois College Experimental Blackbox Theatre, or The ICEBOX, is the home of our student shows and more experimental productions.
Whether your aspirations beyond college include work in the professional theatre, which sometimes requires a Masters degree, or work in a related area, the Illinois College Theatre program prepares students to meet their future goals. Despite claims that a theatre degree is "impractical," it teaches many valuable skills highly prized by employers in a multitude of fields.
