IC Explorer Internship Description
Woodlawn Farm/Underground Railroad Committee
of the Morgan County Historical Society
Woodlawn Farm is a historical landmark near Jacksonville and the site of a former Underground Railroad stop and is operated by the Underground Railroad Committee of the Morgan County Historical Society. The committee is staffed completely by volunteers, and the presence of an intern allows the site to be open to the public for more hours during the summer months.
Under the supervision of experienced historical interpreters the intern will become familiar with the history of Woodlawn Farm and help share the story of this local treasure and its link to the Underground Railroad with visitors as a historical interpreter. The intern will assist the non-profit organization by conducting research on Woodlawn Farm and the Underground Railroad as well as serving as an assistant on special projects as needed.
It is essential to possess an interest in and have an enthusiasm for history, and be willing to dress in period clothing in order to accurately depict characters from this era. Strong oral and interpersonal communication skills are a must. The ability to lead small and large groups, as well as large groups of children, is important.
Instead of full-time for ten weeks, the Woodlawn intern will work three days per week from May – August (12 weeks) on weekends – Saturday and Sunday with one additional agreed upon weekday. This schedule is based upon the days the site is open to the public for tours. The intern will also work on projects for the Morgan County Underground Railroad Committee throughout the summer as they arise.
