Sociology Major Degree Requirements:
A major in Sociology consists of a minimum of 36 semester hours and must include
a general requirement of at least 24 hours as follows:
- SO 101 — One course from SO 206, 302, or 307
- SO 286 — SO 384
- SO 387 — SO 401
- Three hours of field study, independent study, or a service-learning course
The remaining 18 hours needed to fulfill the Sociology major are electives. Here are a few examples of combining courses that will focus on the various sub-fields we offer in the department.
- Criminal Justice: SO 260, 341, 343, 344, 347
- Inequality/Stratification: SO 206, 280, 302, 304, 307
- Family Studies: SO 205, 218, 224, 327, 337, 338
Students must earn a ‘C’ (2.0) or better in each course to be counted towards the major. Majors are also urged to complete a course in statistics, courses in federal, state and local government and in computer skills. These courses do not count toward fulfillment of major requirements.
Completion of SO 101 is a prerequisite for all other departmental courses except SO 205.
SO 101 or PSCH 201 is a prerequisite for SO 286. SO 286 is a pre-requisite for SO 384. One
300-level course is a prerequisite for SO 387, 401, 403, 461, 462, 463, 465, and 466. Junior standing is a prerequisite for SO 386, and SO 387. Any exceptions must have departmental approval.
Sociology Minor Requirements:
A minor in Sociology consists of 20 hours within the department, including SO 101, one 200-level course, and one 300-level course.
