Phi Beta Kappa students are selected on the basis of a distinguished academic record grounded in the liberal arts. Academic excellence in this sense is reflected not only in grades received in college courses, but in the breadth, variety and advanced level of the courses taken.
In particular, the Illinois College Phi Beta Kappa chapter ordinarily considers only those students for membership who have successfully completed college courses in foreign language and mathematics. Beginning with seniors graduating in 2007, prospective members will need to complete a foreign language course at the intermediate (201/202) level or above and a mathematics course at the 200 level or above.
Evidence of academic excellence--such as participation in study abroad programs or undergraduate research--plays an important role in the selection process. Phi Beta Kappa recognizes students who distinguish themselves by their intelligence, good character and consistent record of achievement.
