Creating your own web page
Faculty, students and student organizations at Illinois College can create a web page of their own. It takes a little work to learn all the necessary skills to create and maintain your web area, but in no time at all you should be up and running.
How to begin
You will need server space. Call or email the help desk and request server space for your web site. The help desk will submit the request to the webmaster, who will set up your account. The server that is used by Illinois College for this is called www2. Your web address will be http://www2.ic.edu/yourDirectoryName, the webmaster will send you the name of your directory once it has been set up.

How to create the web page
You need to decide what software you want to use. If you do not want to put a lot of time in learning software, an easy way to make web pages is by using Microsoft Word. If you would like to have more control over your pages and learn how to build the pages from scratch, you will want to use software such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Microsoft Frontpage. These programs cost money and do have a learning curve, but they will give you much more control over the layout of the page. If you don’t have money to purchase these programs you can search the internet for a free editor. These programs are often called WYSIWYG – What you see is what you get. So do a search for free WYSIWYG and you should have plenty to choose from. Also, all Windows PC’s come with two free editors, Notepad and Wordpad. You must learn html code to make your web pages using these editors. These programs can be found by going to your computers desktop and clicking on start-All Programs-Accessories.

Tips
Name your home page index.html. If you name the home page index, you do not have to include the name of the file in the address. Example, your address will be http://www2.ic.edu/yourDirectoryName, if you name the home page something else, let's say home.html, then you will have to include that name in the address to get to your home page. http://www2.ic.edu/yourDirectoryName/home.html.
An extension designates what type of document you are using. Here are some popular extensions.
