Summary
The fundamental mission of Illinois College’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations is to fulfill the inherent need for external support. The following initiatives are vital to the success in fulfilling this mission: 1) attracting favorable recognition to the College and 2) involving a growing number of alumni and volunteers in a broad range of activities.

The Major Gift Officer (MGO) is responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift donors at the $25,000 + level.  The MGO will provide strategic assistance to the Development and Alumni Relations team, President and senior members of the administration as an essential function of this position.

The Major Gift Officer will exercise the ability to work independently and use sound judgment for effective decision making. As such, this position is targeted for work out of the St. Louis, Missouri region through a telecommuting work arrangement.

Essential Functions
Reports to the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations. The following list of duties is meant to be representative of the work performed in this position. The omission of a specific duty or responsibility will not preclude it from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical extension of position responsibilities.
Manage a portfolio of 120-150 planned and major gift prospects/donors with a goal to increase number of major gifts.
Conduct at least 10-15 face-to-face visits with donors and prospects per month (travel required).
Serve as a key member of the fundraising team and actively participate in developing strategies to achieve over-all fundraising goals for financial support and alumni participation.
Work closely with members of the IC cabinet, faculty and staff to guide the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donor relationships. 
Collaborate with Director of Prospect Research and Management for major and planned giving proposal approval and development of gift agreements. 
Collaborate with Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations to prepare proposals and illustrations of life income and estate gift arrangements.
Work closely with colleagues in the Marketing, Communications and Media Relations office to increase awareness of major, planned, and leadership annual gifts through press releases and feature stories in the Alumni Quarterly magazine, the College website, social media and print publications.
MGO will maintain professional affiliations and continue to enhance his/her knowledge in the development and alumni relations field by keeping abreast of the latest information and trends in major gift fundraising, including deferred giving techniques, estate planning and tax laws.
Propose and develop regional events that are integrated with major gift efforts.
Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Development and Alumni Relation and Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations.
 
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree and at least five years of applicable experience is required. 
The preferred candidate will have relevant leadership and relationship-building experience as well as experience with strategic planning in higher education and/or related non-profit organizations. A strong appreciation for the value of private, liberal-arts-based education is a fundamental attribute.
The Major Gift Officer will have a strong ability to engage and collaborate with those who directly and indirectly support Illinois College’s development and alumni relations initiatives. 
The MGO must be able to work and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, manage budgets, work independently, solve problems, handle confidential information with utmost discretion, and navigate sensitive situations.  
The MGO will need to be comfortable working in an environment where fundraising metrics play an essential role in annual performance evaluations. 
Experience with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and experience with constituent relations software, such as Jenzabar, is preferred. 
Regional and national travel is required. Flexibility to work evenings and weekend hours is required.
Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.
