We thought it would be helpful to you, as parents of the 2008 graduates, to be informed of the details for Commencement Weekend, May 9-11.  If you have any questions, please contact the Alumni & Advancement Office at 217.245.3046.

Osage Orange Picnic (Friday, May 9)
6:00 p.m.   Join the Illinois College family on the historic upper quadrangle for a time-honored tradition – The Osage Orange Picnic.  Show your pride and wear Illinois College shirts.  All students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni are invited.  Please bring a dish to share.  Or, you may purchase meals at a cost of $10.00 for adults; $5.00 for children ages 5 - 12; free - children 4 and under, payable at the tent.  In the event of rain, Cummings Dining Hall will serve as the alternate site.

Baccalaureate (Sunday, May 11)
10:00 a.m.   Pre-Baccalaureate Concert by the Music Department, Rammelkamp Chapel

10:00 a.m.   Graduates gather, in cap and gown, on sidewalk south of Tanner Hall at the Jonathan Baldwin Turner stone near the Osage Orange tree.  The Class of 2008 will process into the Chapel.  Family and guests may sit anywhere they like.  In case of rain, the class will assemble and line up in the basement of the Chapel.

10:30 a.m.  Baccalaureate Service, Rammelkamp Chapel.  Speaker: Susan D. Krummer, Executive Presbyter, Presbytery of Great Rivers.

Luncheon Honoring Graduates and Their Families (Sunday, May 11)
11:30 a.m. –  1:00 p.m.  Graduates, all members of their families and friends are invited to eat lunch on campus.  Buffet lines 1:00 p.m.  will be set up in Cummings Dining Hall as well as in the Uncommons.  Graduates are provided three complimentary meals, one for each graduate and two for guests.  Cost for additional family and friends is $10.00 - adults; $5.00 - children, ages 5 - 12; free - 4 and under, payable at the door.  The informal lunch will be served buffet style in order to accommodate the large number of people expected to attend.  Lunch will be served until 1:00 p.m.  Graduates are responsible for making reservations for the entire family with the Alumni Office by Friday, May 2. 

Commencement (Sunday, May 11)
2:00 p.m.   Graduates assemble, in cap and gown, on the steps of Rammelkamp Chapel for the Class of 2008 photo.  The photo will be taken promptly at 2:10 p.m.  Immediately following, Illinois College Legacy photos will be taken of graduates and their relatives who are alumni of Illinois College.  Graduates are responsible for notifying the Alumni Office if your family is a legacy family.

3:00 p.m.   Commencement, Quadrangle.  Speaker: Connie Schultz, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for The Plain Dealer (Cleveland, Ohio).

The College does not issue tickets for Commencement.  Everyone is welcome.  Chairs and bleachers are set up by the College, as well as water stations around the quadrangle.  Many guests enjoy bringing their own lawn chairs and blankets.

At the end of the recessional, the College’s faculty will form an aisle congratulating graduates as they walk through.  This line will lead the grads to the open area of the quadrangle to meet family and friends.

In case of rain, Commencement will be held in Sherman Gymnasium, Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center.  Families are to enter the building at the main north entrance.  Graduates will enter the west door on the north side of the building and gather in the King Field House at 2:00 p.m.  The Class photo will be taken promptly at 2:10 p.m., followed by the Legacy photos.  When the ceremony begins, faculty and graduates will process by the racquet ball courts, enter the gym at the east end, and go up the center aisle on the court to reserved seats.

Special Needs
Baccalaureate and Commencement will be signed for the hearing impaired.  Special seating areas will be available for hearing impaired and those in wheelchairs.  The following drop off points are suggested:

  • Rammelkamp Chapel – unload at the drive on the south side of the chapel
  • Cummings Hall – unload at the west door 
  • Quadrangle – unload at the sidewalk between Crampton and Whipple halls
  • Sherman Gymnasium, Bruner – unload at the walk in front of the building

Handicap accessible restrooms are located in Kirby Hall, Baxter Hall, Parker Science Building,  Caine Student Center and Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center.  There will be attendants at the elevator in Bruner to assist those with wheelchairs to the designated area on court level.  For more information, contact the Alumni Office at 217.245.3046.  An ambulance will be on site the entire day in case of an emergency. 

Photo
The Office of Communications and Marketing staff will take a photograph of each graduate receiving his or her diploma.  The Alumni Office will mail each graduate a complimentary copy of this photo and the Class of 2008 photo in June.

Parking
All campus parking lots are open for general parking during Commencement Weekend.

Saturday, May 12 – 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.; Sunday, May 13 – 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
