Sweatman, Hickey demonstrate Leadership
Courtney Sweatman and Eileen Hickey have stepped into key roles for the Illinois College volleyball team and provided the young Lady Blues' with some much-needed leadership and experience. The two veterans gave an indication of their value to the team during the Illinois College Blue Brawl Tournament September 5-6 and served notice that the IC women were intent upon securing a place this fall among the top teams in the Midwest Conference.
In five matches during the opening tournament, Sweatman pounded 53 kills and finished with a .173 hitting percentage. Hickey was equally impressive and was named the tournament's most valuable player after registering 120 digs-good enough for an average of six per game. At the net, the Lady Blues also enjoyed stellar efforts from Kathleen Fox (30 kills), Taylor McDermott (24 kills) and Hayley Baker (24 kills). Courtney O'Connor filled the setter position and posted 64 assists, and Kelly Van Gennip saw significant action in that role, as well, and finished with 46 assists. Janice Johnson contributed 45 digs during the two days of action while Sweatman registered 69 digs and O'Connor had 49.
