Lady Blues have solid volleyball tradition
Despite significant graduation losses, Illinois College fully expects to maintain and strengthen the competitive nature of its volleyball program this fall and remain a consistent force in the Midwest Conference.
Coming off a season that included a South Division title and a third-place finish at the league’s championship tournament, the Lady Blues will give a number of younger players the opportunity to shine this fall and take their places in the varsity rotation. Veteran hitters Mary Parks and Angela Siebers rank among the league’s top tandems along the front line while juniors Clarissa Edge, Katie Miller and Lindsay Walthall will fill play-maker roles for a team that will feature quickness and athleticism. Eileen Hickey, Janice Johnson, Valerie Howell and Emily Morrow give the team some welcome depth, and could vie for varsity time along with a talented group of first-year players.
Siebers hit .213 as a sophomore in 2006 and led the team in kills (401), service aces (60) and total blocks (95) en route to first-team all-Midwest Conference honors. Her marks of 3.53 kills and 0.56 aces led all league players, and she earned her team’s Offensive Player of the Year award. Parks is also on track for a banner season after playing with injuries as a junior. She still managed 159 kills and gives her team a strong presence up front, and her leadership skills provide another valuable dimension to her game.
Volleyball enjoys a reputation as one of Illinois College’s most successful sports, and there are plenty of reasons to believe more of the same lies ahead.
