Golfers eager to return to Nationals
Women’s golf at Illinois College achieved a milestone in the spring of 2007 when the Lady Blues made their inaugural appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament at Howie-in-the-Hills, Florida. The four rounds of play at the El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort and Club marked the latest chapter in the ongoing development of a program that has quickly reached a level of prominence among the finest women’s D-III golf teams in the Midwest.
Fresh from four straight Midwest Conference titles, the IC women will attempt to continue their dominance in league play this fall. They will have to do without four-time MWC medalist Carey Cappel, but Head Coach Brenna Kelly feels she has the student-athletes in place who can sustain IC’s championship run. Senior Kristin Schmalz and junior Janelle Kuhn finished second and third, respectively, at the league championship while juniors Meredith Robinson was sixth and Leah Reuschel eighth. As the program grows, so does its ability to attract outstanding new candidates, and Coach Kelly said several freshmen should strengthen the roster in 2007.
Golf Digest listed Illinois College as one of top schools in the nation for women’s golf in 2006, and Golf World ranked the IC women 16th in the first college golf coaches’ poll of 2007. Cappel brought additional distinction to the program when she was named to the National Golf Coaches Association 2007 NCAA Division III honorable mention All-America women's golf team
