Illinois College junior D.J. Jackson tied a Midwest Conference record in the men's outdoor long jump April 21 that has stood since 1961 and, in process, secured a spot in the 2009 NCAA Division III men's and women's track and field championships. The Webster Groves, MO., resident leaped 24-0 1/4 (7.32m) at the Illinois College Mid-Week Invitational and tied the standard set by Glen Brooks of Monmouth College in 1961. Jackson also shattered the Illinois College men's long jump record of 23-0 3/4 that he set April 4at an invitational hosted by Washington University at St. Louis. Last May, Francis Nugent of Redlands College wom the NCAA Divsion III title in the long jump with an effort of 23-6 3/4. The NCAA Division III men's outdoor long jump record is 25-8. Jackson's effort on April 21 ranks him third in the nation so far this spring.The Illinois College junior has also earned provisional qualifying status for the national finals in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Jackson's current time of 10.73 in the 100 is the eighth-best effort in the nation so far this spring, and he ranks ninth in the nation in the 200 with a time of 21.54. Three other members of the Illinois College men's and women's outdoor track and field team have also met provisional qualifying standards in their respective events. Senior Katie Miller of Paloma (Camp Point Central) is eighth in the nation in the women's long jump with a season-best effort of 18-5 3/4, and junior Dink Simmons of Carlinville ranks 12th in the men's long jump with a season best of 23-0. Junior Candace Norville of Batavia met provisional qualification standard in the women's heptathlon by compiling 4,402 points over the course of seven different events April 17 at an invitaional competition hosted by Augustana College. That total places Norville sixth among the nation's D-III heptathlon competitors.
