Richard Worsell (Offensive Coordinator)

Richard Worsell, who formerly coached quarterbacks and receivers at Millikin University, joins new Head Coach Garrett Campbell’s coaching staff as offensive coordinator. The other new assistants include Jason Martinez, Ronald Patron II and Caleb Barnes.

Worsell, a native of Great Britain, spent three seasons at Millikin following a two-year stint as assistant coach at Lakeland College where he also coached track. He graduated from Aberystwyth University near London in 2003 and was head football coach at the school for three years. He was an assistant in 2003 with the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe and was head coach of the Sussex Thunder in 2002.

“I have known Coach Worsell since he came to the U.S. to coach and believe that he is a very intelligent person with an excellent football mind,” Campbell said of his new top assistant.

Worsell earned his undergraduate degree at Aberystwyth and has an MBA from Lakeland. In addition to coaching football at IC, Worsell will coach men’s and women’s swimming.

Jason Martinez (Defensive Line)

Martinez will coach the Blueboys’ defensive line and serve as head coach of the IC men’s tennis team. He graduated from Albion College in 2004 and holds a master’s degree in sports studies from Bemidiji State University.

“Coach Martinez has a proven record of success with the defensive line and will do an excellent job,” Campbell said.

As a defensive line coach at Bemidiji the past two season, Martinez was instrumental in his team’s success at stopping opponents. Bemidiji posted the nation’s top run defense at the NCAA Division II level in 2006 and earned top rankings in sacks and interceptions.

A Michigan native, Martinez was a standout lineman at Albion where he served one season as assistant coach before moving on to Bemidiji State.

Ronald Patron (Offensive Line)

Patron spent the 2007 season as an assistant football coach at Doane College in Nebraska. He graduated from Doane in 2007 and spent several months as a player and coach with an American football team in Paris, France. He will coach the Blueboys’ offensive line.

“Coach Patron has a passion for offensive line play and think he will do a wonderful job,” Campbell said of the new assistant coach.

Caleb Barnes (Defensive Backs)

Barnes was a standout football player at Alma College and started for the 2004 squad that qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs. As a college freshman, he attended Grand Valley State University and played on the team that won the 2002 NCAA Division II national championship. He also spent a season as an assistant football coach at the high school level in his native Michigan.

"Coach Barnes and I competed against each other in the 2004 NCAA Playoffs,” Campbell said of his new assistant. “He has an excellent football background and
will help us achieve great things.”

Ray DeFrisco (Defensive Coordinator)

Ray DeFrisco, a Chicago, Ill. native, earned a degree in Communication Arts in 2002 from North Park University. While at North Park DeFrisco played defensive line for the Vikings.

After graduation, DeFrisco became the Assistant Director of Admissions and taught Physical Education and Health at St. Patrick High School in Chicago. He also started his coaching career at St. Patrick High School where he was the assistant defensive coordinator, the special teams coordinator, and coached the outside linebackers.

Garrett Campbell, who was named head football coach at IC in May, announced that assistant coach Ray DeFrisco has been promoted to defensive coordinator. DeFrisco will also coach the Blueboys’ golf team.

“Coach DeFrisco is the right man to lead our defense,” Campbell said of the staff veteran. He is an excellent leader of young men, as well as a hard-working and intelligent football coach.” DeFrisco serves as the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator.
