Football was first played on Illinois College's hilltop campus back in 1891, and the Blueboys have enjoyed a proud history on the gridiron. Illinois College was a member of the Little 19 Conference during the first part of the 20th century and later became a charter member of the College Conference of Illinois (which would later become the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin). One of the team's proudest eras came during the 1970s when the late Joe Brooks coached the Blueboys to a prominent ranking among the top Division III football teams in Illinois.
Illinois College football appears poised for a spirited run at the top tier of the Midwest Conference. IC has developed a comprehensive, state-of-the-art fitness center on campus, alumni support is strong, and high school coaches and athletes across downstate Illinois have shown renewed interest in the program. With a solid nucleus of players due back in 2008, football at Illinois College is well on its way to regaining the pride and respectability that were Blueboy trademarks many years ago.
