Head Coach - Jay Eckhouse
Head Coach Jay Eckhouse (Illinois College, ‘78) 7th Season
Former Illinois College star athlete Jay Eckhouse returned to the baseball diamond as the head coach for the Blueboys in the 2002 season. The program has seen steady improvement each year under the leadership of Eckhouse with win totals of 7, 9, 16, and 21 victories in 2005. The 21 wins was the second most victories in school history and missed breaking the mark by one win. This past spring, the IC baseball team finished with a record of 18-18, along with a berth to the conference tournament. The Blueboys made appearances in the 2004 and 2005 conference tournaments, something no team had accomplished in back to back seasons. Coach Eckhouse hopes that this recent success, despite graduating six seniors, will carry over to the 2008 season. With eleven returning seniors, the entire of the pitching staff, and a strong recruiting class coming in, Eckhouse feels the Blueboys can again contend for the conference championship when the season begins in February.
Eckhouse, an Alton native, started at first base for three consecutive years and led the team in batting with a .386 average in 1976. He was a record-setting football player for the Blueboys during the 1970s. He started 33 straight games at quarterback and threw for 3,221 yards and 39 touchdowns while virtually rewriting the Illinois College record book. He also had the record for attempts (582) and completions (244).
Eckhouse was inducted into the Illinois College Sports Hall of Fame in 1988 and has enjoyed a career as a teacher and coach in Alton, Carrollton and Jacksonville. He was elected to the Illinois College Alumni Board of Directors in 1999 and was the head baseball coach at Jacksonville High School in 2001.
Eckhouse also serves as a an assistant football coach at Illinois College. Eckhouse and his wife, Gina, live in Jacksonville and have two sons.
