Illinois College is interested in any student athlete who loves the game of baseball and wants to play it in a competitive NCAA Division III program. Multiple-sport athletes have an opportunity to continue participation in fall and/or winter sports as well as baseball.
Illinois College competes in the highly competitive Midwest Conference. The conference includes NCAA Division III schools in Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. For baseball purposes the conference is divided into North and South divisions. Each division plays home and away doubleheaders against other divisional schools. The top two finishers in each division then meet in a double elimination series, with the champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Philosophically, baseball needs to be fun for those participating. Players who have respect for the game, along with respect for themselves and their teammates seem to have the most success. We will take a look at our team's strengths each year and aim to utilize those strengths. We do not feel that any single approach is best until we look at our own baseball team. Running, moving people over, and utilizing the hit and run are parts of the game we will always attempt to utilize. Defense and pitching are the keys to any successful baseball program. Our teams have always played good defense and we will continue to emphasize defensive prowess in our game preparation and practices. Our pitchers will always be prepared through scouting reports, drills, etc. to react to anything that may occur during a game situation.
An eight-day spring training trip to Ft. Meyers, Fla. kicks off the season for the Blueboys. Upon our return we play a series of non-conference contests leading up to the "home and home" doubleheaders mentioned previously. In addition to our conference schedule we will never shy away from playing the most competitive teams we can schedule, including Division I and II opponents.
If you are interested in a first-class academic institution and have the desire and ability to play in a competitive program, you should consider Illinois College. Feel free to contact Coach Eckhouse or the Admissions Department with any questions.
