Illinois College Intramural
Dodgeball Tournament

PLAY AREA:

The game is played indoors on one of the basketball courts in the King Fieldhouse inside the Bruner center.

EQUIPMENT:

Players must wear proper attire (tennis shoes with non-marking soles, matching shirts etc.) No zippers or metal embellishments permitted on clothing. With 6 players per team, 8 dodgeballs will be used per court.

TEAMS:

A team consists of 6 players on the court. A team may play with fewer than 6 (that would be a disadvantage as there are fewer players to eliminate. Players that are “out” must wait behind their court. At least 2 females must be on the floor to start each game for each team.

TIME/RESULTS:

Each game (round) shall be decided by the best of three matches. Each match shall have a time limit of ten minutes play.

A match is won in one of three ways:

    1. If all members of one team are out then the opposing team wins.
    2. If the time limit is hit then whatever team has more members left in play wins.
    3. If the time limit is hit and both teams have an even amount of members left then the game goes to sudden death with the first team having a player eliminated loses.

Forfeit Time: Teams not present at the scheduled start time will forfeit and remaining team will advance.

PLAY:

    • To start the game 4-6 dodgeballs are placed on center line. All players must stand behind back line of the court to await Referee’s whistle blow to begin the match.
    • If a player is hit by a “fly ball”, before it hits the floor and after being thrown by a player on the opposing team that player is out.
    • If a player catches a “fly ball”, the thrower is out. ALSO one member of the catcher’s team returns from elimination deck. Players come back into the game in the order they were eliminated.
    • A player who is hit in the head (if they did not duck) is not out. The thrower is out. If the player hit in the head did duck, there is no consequence.
    • A ball deflected by a held ball, whether caught or not, does not result in player elimination.
    • A ball rebounding off a “catch” attempt may be caught before touching the floor by any in bounds player on the “hit” players team. Any caught ball that has not hit the floor results in the elimination of the thrower. If a ball rebounds off of another player and a second player catches the ball, the first player is not out, the thrower is. The team catching the ball does not gain an additional player in this case, since the hit player is allowed to stay on the court.
    • A ball rebounding off a wall or curtain does not eliminate a player.
    • A player may not step on or over the center line. They may reach over to retrieve a ball.

Out-of-Bounds: If a player touches the side-curtain or end-curtain they will be counted out-of-bounds and are eliminated.

BONUS TARGET:

If a player makes a basket in the opposing team’s basket, all players from his/her team come back on the floor. If the ball does not reach the BONUS TARGET and is caught, the thrower is out. Any ball hitting the backboard or rim is live and may be caught for elimination.

AT NO TIME CAN ANY TEAM EXCEED 6 PLAYERS ON THE COURT AT ONE TIME.

SAFETY:

Players may not lift or support their teammates in catching a throw etc. Uniforms must be safe, nonhazzardous and may not have zippers, or sharp objects or embellishments. Glasses must be removed unless they are safety glasses and secured with strap. No braces (leg, arm, wrist, etc) may be worn with exposed metal. If metal is exposed, it must be wrapped securely to avoid injury to self or other team mates.

ELIMINATION DECK:

    • Eliminated players on each court will form lines 2-5 feet from the sideline from the centerline of the court keeping in order of elimination. Re-enter on a “caught” ball in same order eliminated.
    • Eliminated players MAY ROLL an out of bounds ball back into the game, but may NOT throw an out of bounds ball back to their team or opposing team.
