Illinois College Music

What makes a major in Music from Illinois College distinctive?
The courses in music are designed to enrich and broaden cultural background and stimulate increased understanding of and participation in music.  Students have the opportunity to study at a high level of several different areas of music whether it be vocal or instrumental.  Students receive personalized training by experts in specific areas of music.  This gives the student specialized preparation in music scholarship, performance and teaching.  Recently, music majors have focused in the areas vocal, piano, and organ performance along with musicology and music education.

What opportunities are available for students interested in music?

Music Ensembles –Illinois College offers a brass ensemble, wind ensemble, concert choir, renaissance singers, jazz band and a newly formed pep band.  These ensembles are the most visible extension of the music department.  All of these groups perform on and off-campus several times each year.  Along with these ensembles our students have also participated in the Jacksonville Symphony chorale and orchestra.

For many ensemble participants, the highlight of the performing year comes during extended tours.  These tours have taken the IC Music Department to New York City, St. Louis, Denver, Chicago, New Orleans and Florida in recent years.

The Illinois College Fine Arts Series- For more than 25 years the McGaw Fine Arts Series has treated audiences to some of the world’s finest musical entertainment.  Students have the chance to listen to nationally and internationally recognized music artists.  The Series allows students to experience genres of music new to them.

Breakaway Program-This offers a unique opportunity for students to learn outside of the classroom.  Recent breakaway trips have included a historic music tour of New York City and a study of pipe organs in Italy.

What do our music majors do after graduating from Illinois College?
Many of the music majors at Illinois College go on into education.  Whether it is in the classroom or privately, music education is a common choice for many of our majors. A music major can receive K-12 certification.

Graduate school is also another popular choice among music majors.  Illinois College students have gone on to graduate school to study vocal and instrumental performance, education, musicology and music business.  Some of the recent graduates have pursued graduate study at Arizona State University, University of Iowa, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and Northwestern.

What objectives do faculty members in the music department have for their majors?
Students graduating with a degree in Music should be able to participate in music whether they work in the field or not.  They will be able to pursue performing, teaching and scholarly outlets.  Analyzing music and being able to structurally critic performances they attend will also be to their ability.
