What is distinctive about a management and organizational leadership major at Illinois College?

A major in management and organizational leadership enables students to begin any career that requires fundamental knowledge of the principles of management and the qualities of leadership. Students are equipped with the knowledge required to create value in public or private entities, manage in a global environment, and develop useful products and services for customers. The student majors are required to complete a core set of courses that prepare them for the more advanced curriculum resident in the various areas of concentration. Currently there are two such areas: Management, Sports and Recreation Management.

What opportunities are available for students?

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a global not-for-profit education organization aimed at helping world citizens understand the principles and values of market economics. Members of SIFE compete nationally against teams from other colleges and universities based upon completed projects and formal presentations.

A student’s faculty advisor and the Career Center, located in Baxter Hall, are Illinois College’s main resources for matching a student’s interest with an internship. Recent placements for management and organizational leadership majors include H.D. Smith Wholesale Drug Company, Illinois Manufacturer’s Association, Wells Fargo Financial, and Athletes Group.

The Illinois College Warren Billhartz Student Investment Club is a student organization, which teaches what investing consists of and how to invest wisely. In using real money, the students have the chance to see firsthand the effects the market has on the investment portfolio. Along with learning various skills, the group also takes various trips throughout the year to businesses such as the Archer Daniel Midland’s headquarters in Decatur, IL and Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting in Omaha, NE.

What opportunities are available after graduation?

Management and organizational leadership majors are well equipped to enter the job market or graduate school after completing their academic careers at Illinois College. Students have taken jobs with Wells Fargo Financial, Archer Daniels Midland, Boeing, Illinois College, and the Milwaukee Brewers among other companies. Types of employment include human resource generalists, credit managers, professors, underwriters, account representatives, business owners, ticket sales executives, and associate scouts. Graduate schools include University of Illinois at Springfield, Southern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, St. Louis University, Washington University, and University of Chicago among many others.
