Faculty Development
How can I get money to support my research to develop new courses?
The College has funds to support faculty travel to conferences and for research. See the Faculty Handbook, pp. 58 and 59.
The College offers full-time faculty the opportunity to apply for prizes and grants. Click on the button labeled Faculty Development to the left of this page.
Marching in Academic Processions
When do faculty march?
Faculty march, wearing regalia, at the Opening Celebration, at the beginning of fall semester, at the Honors Celebration near the end of the second semester, and at Commencement. All full-time and part-time faculty are encouraged to participation in these academic processions.
Who marches?
All full-time faculty are expected to participate in all academic processions. All part-time faculty are invited to participate.
How can I get academic regalia?
Contact the Office of Academic Affairs. Teresa Smith will take orders for renting regalia during the summer of each academic year. She will notify you when it arrives, always in time for our Opening Celebration. You can pick it up from her and give her a check at the same time. You return it to Teresa after Commencement.
Daily Responsibilities
How can I get office supplies?
Departments purchase office supplies and business cards for their members. Contact your department chair to learn the process in your department. In many cases, chairs ask their academic support staff to keep track of supplies and arrange the purchase of new ones.
Faculty purchasing office supplies on behalf of a department can use the Staples and/or Walmart credit cards available in the Business Office. Using those cards certifies our non-profit status, which allows us to purchase tax-free.
The Business Office purchases printer and photocopy paper, white as well as in colors, in bulk. This is stored in the Mailroom. Departments can use this source, which lowers their costs.
Faculty Meetings
When is faculty meeting?
Faculty meeting takes place the first Monday of every month during the academic year from 4:30 to 6:00 PM in Kirby 6. All full-time faculty are expected to attend. All part-time faculty are invited to attend.
Our first faculty meeting each academic year takes place on the Friday before classes begin, usually at 9:00 AM. We do not normally have a faculty meeting in September or January.
What should I do if I have to miss a faculty meeting?
If as a full-time faculty member, you are prevented from attending a faculty meeting, the Secretary of the Faculty ask that you call Teresa Smith at 245-3010 with that information.
What services do the academic support staff offer?
Course Approval
What is the process for approving new courses?
Individual faculty design their own courses, in consultation with their colleagues. Chairs must approve new course proposals, the form for which can be found by clicking the Printable Forms button to the left. The faculty member then sends the form to the Division Chair for division approval. Finally, the Division Chair forwards their decision to the Educational Policy Committee, which considers the proposal. The EPC sends its recommendations to the full faculty.
Catalog copy is due by December 1 of each year. Therefore, faculty who wish their course descriptions to appear in the Catalog should arrange to have approval before this date.
New courses may be taught for one year without divisional or EPC approval. In this case, the course receives a number indicating that it is experimental: 198, 298, or 398. If the course will be taught a second year, it must receive formal approval.

How can my course be categorized as satisfying a general education category?
On the form for proposing a new course, there is a section about general education categories.
Sabbaticals
When can I take a sabbatical?
Faculty are eligible to take sabbaticals after six full years of teaching at Illinois College. The procedures for application are spelled out in the Handbook, on pp. 60-61.
What do I have to do when returning from a sabbatical?
You need to write a letter to the Dean of the College explaining how you used your sabbatical. It’s probably also a good idea to give a copy to your department or program chair.
