We are a liberal arts college. An Illinois College education provides each student with the skills, knowledge, and habits of mind which lead to success in later life. Our graduates include past governors of Illinois, doctors, teachers, business persons, and people notable in their communities as caring family members.
Our students define success in many ways. Some want the skills to get a rewarding job in business, law, politics, medicine, teaching, and social services. Most students expect the knowledge they learn in college to help them make sense of the world. Others students seek the ability to be life-long learners, in new jobs, making political decisions, creating relationships, and raising children.
Our curriculum helps students make the transition from high school to college. All students become part of IC Connections, giving them a First-Year Seminar, with only other first years, to practice the skills of writing and discussion. IC Connections also provides help in registration, adjustment to life in the residences, fun activities during Orientation, and a series of special Convocations attended by all first-year students. Every first-year also takes a course in writing, in public speaking, and in library research.
Our curriculum provides a general education for all students. Students take courses in a wide variety of subjects, but not all students take the same courses. We offer a wide variety of courses from which students can choose.
Every student also chooses a major, usually at the end of their sophomore year. We offer 35 different majors, and the possibility of developing your own. We also offer 30 minors, and many students have more than one major or minor.
