Illinois College Computer Science

What is distinctive about a Computer Science major at Illinois College?
The primary focus of the computer science major is for students to learn a solid practical foundation in software development (algorithm development and programming). They also study the fundamentals of theory and hardware, and how both relate to software. While in the classroom, professors place an emphasis on the concepts and ideas rather than technical training, which allows students to develop the critical thinking skills necessary in the field of computer science. The computer science department in conjunction with the economics and business administration department also offers a degree in Management Information Systems (MIS).

What opportunities are available for student?
The purpose of the Computer Club is to learn more about how computers are a part of our everyday life and to discuss the latest issues concerning the computer science field of study. The club takes field trips to facilities that use computers as a mainstay of their business, and sponsor an end-of-the-year social gathering to give out departmental awards. Some members of the club participate in the annual Associate of Computing Machinery (ACM) Regional programming contests.

Students in all academic disciplines, including computer science, are strongly encouraged to acquire practical experience by completing an internship. Recent internships for computer science students include those with State Farm Insurance, Levi, Ray and Shoup Inc., Computer Science Corporation, and Argonne National Laboratory.

What opportunities are available after graduation?
Many computer science graduates who have decided to obtain higher degrees have recently attended University of Kansas, University of Illinois at Springfield, and Louisiana State University.

Computer science majors have accepted jobs as application specialists, computer programmers, information systems auditors, and support center specialists.  Students have been employed by Levi, Ray & Shoup Inc., Karmak, State Farm Insurance, and Computer Science Corporation.
