Chemistry Class

Chemistry affects all phases of our modern lives, from the clothes we wear, to the cars we drive, to the food we eat, to the houses in which we live. With substantial overlap between both the disciplines of biology and physics, chemistry is often called the “central science,” and a grounding in chemistry is beneficial for all science majors. The Department of Chemistry is committed to educating liberal arts students to think critically and independently and to communicate ideas effectively. It is the mission of the department to prepare students who wish to pursue:
• Their intellectual curiosity about the nature of the physical world and the underlying chemical principles that govern it.
• Admission to graduate programs in
a) chemistry and related field
b) health- professions fields
c) professional fields such as engineering.
• Employment or service in areas such as business, industry, and government where a chemical and technical background is essential.

Our goals are that all chemistry students be able to: 1) Understand chemical principles, concepts and theories and be able to interpret major scientific events, reports, and ideas from multiple perspectives; 2) Design, conduct and interpret the results of experiments aimed at solving chemical problems, thereby developing independent ideas supported by credible arguments; 3) Clearly and effectively present chemical information, both in writing and orally, in a manner appropriate to the relevant audience.

A major in Chemistry consists of a minimum of 34 semester hours in Chemistry distributed as follows:
1. Core Courses (24 hours)

  • General Chemistry (CHEM 111, 112)
  • Organic Chemistry (CHEM 203, 204)
  • Physical Chemistry (CHEM 341, 342)

2. Advanced Courses (8 hours)

Selected from: Biochemistry I & II (CHEM 309, 310); Advanced Organic (CHEM 401); Combinatorial Chemistry (CHEM 402); Computational Chemistry (CHEM 404); Quantitative Analysis (CHEM 211); Instrumental Methods (CHEM 312).

Students may elect to concentrate in a particular sub-field as follows.

  • Analytical Chemistry: Quantitative Analysis (CHEM 211), Instrumental Analysis (CHEM 312)
  • Biochemistry: Biochemistry I & II (CHEM 309, 310) (additional course work in biology: BIOL 307 is recommended).
  • Physical Chemistry: Computational Chemistry (CHEM 404), Instrumental Methods (CHEM 312) (additional course work in Math – MATH 233, 323; and Physics – PHYS 201, 202 recommended).
  • Synthetic Chemistry: Advanced Organic (CHEM 401), Combinatorial Chemistry (CHEM 402) (research experience recommended).

3. Senior Seminars (2 hours): CHEM 441 & 442

The American Chemical Society (ACS) recommends that chemistry majors complete the following: General Chemistry (CHEM 111, 112), Organic Chemistry (CHEM 203, 204), Analytical Chemistry (CHEM 211), Physical Chemistry (CHEM 341, 342), Biochemistry (CHEM 309), 500 contact hours of laboratory time (students should include undergraduate research), 6 credit hours of advanced courses with lab (CHEM 310, 312, 401, 402, or 404), calculus (MATH 213, 223, 233), and physics (PHYS 201, 202).

Other departmental options:

  • Biology/Chemistry combined major. Beyond the requirements for a Biology major (CHEM 111, 112, 203), the following courses in Chemistry are required: CHEM 204, 309, and 310.
  • Environmental Studies (ENVS)/Chemistry combined major. This major Emphasizes environmental analysis. Beyond the requirements for a B.S. ENVS major (CHEM 111, 112), the following courses in Chemistry are required: CHEM 111, 112, 203, 204 or 309, 211, and 312.
  • Minor in Chemistry. A Chemistry minor consists of CHEM 111, 112, 203, 204, and one additional chemistry course at the 200-level or above.
