Samuel Whipple, a New England native and prominent abolitionist, established the Whipple Preparatory Academy in 1869 on Jacksonville’s downtown square. The academy was relocated to the Illinois College campus in 1882 when Whipple Hall was built. The structure was used primarily for classrooms and faculty offices for much of the following century. It also housed a physics lab for a brief time. Whipple Hall also housed Pi Pi Rho Literary Society and Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity during the first years of the 21st century. An extensive renovation project scheduled to begin in 2009 is designed to ensure that Whipple Hall will continue to serve an important campus role for at least another century.
