Tobin named Provost and Dean of the College
Illinois College President Barbara Farley named Elizabeth Tobin to the new position of provost and dean of the college. Tobin has served as the chief academic officer of the college since 2006.

“I knew of Dean Tobin’s distinguished reputation for academic leadership before assuming the presidency of Illinois College,” Farley said. “I am enormously grateful that she has agreed to my request to assume additional campus-wide and strategic responsibilities, and to support my work in the day-to-day operations of the college.”

A few of Tobin’s new responsibilities include taking the lead on the Strategy Steering Committee, the Clearance Project to ensure students’ financial accountability and the discussions about revising summer orientations. She will also create a Council on Experiential Learning to allow those who lead student experiential learning initiatives to collaborate.

Tobin will continue to lead teams seeking grants for the college such as the National Endowment for the Humanities grant for the Khalaf Al Habtoor Archives, the NETVUE grant and the TRiO grant. She has responsibility for the Office of Information Technology, the Office of the Registrar, the Office of Institutional Research, Schewe Library, the Leadership Program and the Master of Arts in Education program. Tobin also participates in assessment of faculty work through membership on the Retention, Tenure, and Promotion Committee and the Assessment Committees, as well as leading the process of external reviews of departments and programs.

Tobin holds a B.A. in history from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. in history from Princeton University.

President Farley also announced two other changes in the Office of Academic Affairs. She named Adam Porter as dean of faculty and Andrew Jones as dean of student success. Both positions will report to Tobin.

Porter, formerly the associate dean of the college, will be responsible for working with faculty on curriculum, governance, assessment of student learning, hiring of new faculty and yearly evaluation of faculty. The chairs of academic departments and coordinators of interdisciplinary programs report to Porter. He will also take responsibility for the advisory role played by the Office of Academic Affairs on several faculty committees including the Curriculum Review Committee and the Educational Policy Committee. He will continue to lead the Convocation Program which is part of students’ required curriculum for graduation. Porter is also professor of religion.

Jones, former director of the Center for Academic Excellence, will be responsible for working with both students and faculty to promote student success. He leads the Early Intervention Group which monitors and supports students struggling academically and the Dorothy Foster Society, which connects outstanding new students with each other and with opportunities for intellectual achievement. Jones will also lead a number of groups aimed at supporting students’ academic success including the Center for Academic Excellence, the Office of Study Abroad, the faculty Director of IC Connections, the Speech Center and the Writing Center. Jones is also assistant professor of education.
