Computer science professors collaborate on textbook

Illinois College computer science professors James Streib and Takako Soma have published a textbook, “Guide to Java: A Concise Introduction to Programming.”

The book, published by Springer this past March, is a direct result of a paper Streib and Soma wrote a few years ago, “Using Contour Diagrams and JIVE to Illustrate Object-Oriented Semantics in the Java Programming Language.“

“Guide to Java” presents a focused and accessible primer on the fundamentals of Java programming with extensive use of illustrative examples and hands-on exercises. “A unique feature of the text is its use of contour diagrams which helps readers understand object oriented concepts,” Streib says.

Streib and Soma wrote the textbook to be concise and easy-to-follow, and is ideal for for students in an introductory programming course.

“We were quite pleased that the text was not only accepted, but also accepted as part of Springer’s prestigious Undergraduate Topics in Computer Science (UTiCS) series,” Soma says.
