In the news: IC's soccer coach talks World Cup

6.26.2014

One Illinois College coach has more than a passing interest in this year’s FIFA men’s World Cup soccer tournament.

For Linda Hamilton, the new IC women’s soccer coach, soccer has been a major part of her life for 30-plus years. After all, she was a four-time All-American soccer player in college and a member of the first U.S. women’s soccer team, which won the 1991 women’s World Cup, the first event of its kind.

“The growth and awareness of the game in the United States is really cool to see compared to 1991 when we won the World Cup and the only people who knew were really our families and those invested in the sport,” Hamilton said.

“I’m super excited this year. I think the men have done a great job so far. They’ve put themselves in a position to move on to the next round in one of the toughest groups — The Group of Death.”

The Group of Death is composed of the United States, Ghana, Germany and Portugal, with the latter two teams being ranked in the Top 10 men’s soccer teams in the world.

The United States defeated Ghana 2-1 June 16 and had a 2-2 draw against Portugal on Sunday. The U.S. men’s team plays Germany at 11 a.m. today on ESPN.
