In the news: Illinois College graduates 221 students

5.12.2014

Under partly sunny skies, Illinois College conferred degrees on 221 graduates Sunday afternoon on the college’s historic upper quadrangle.

Among that number were the first 13 students to graduate from IC’s master of arts in education program.

Erica Helmich, kindergarten teacher at Murrayville-Woodson Elementary School, was one of those who earned a master’s degree in education. She said she already has applied in her classroom many of the ideas and techniques she learned through the master’s program.

“I feel my degree has already helped me in my career, by having more current and up-to-date information about the education field,” Helmich said. “The wide range of teaching experiences and grade levels represented in my master’s classes afforded me the opportunity to use what I learned in my classroom this year.”

Brianne Gerecke, math teacher at Pittsfield High School, said she also benefited from the master’s in education program at IC.

“The courses have challenged me to continuously analyze my own teaching practices and procedures,” she said. “This has definitely made a difference in my classroom and to my students on a daily basis.”
