In the news: IC joins world in recalling Holocaust

Illinois College sophomore Renata Gray has grown up hearing stories from her Polish grandparents and other relatives who remember what life was like during and immediately after the Holocaust.

Gray’s uncle once visited the sites of concentration camps and reported back to her that, during tours of the camps, “no one made a sound,” Gray said.

Gray feels she now has a deeper understanding of the reverence that would prompt such silence.

“It’s such a dark thing,” said Gray, who was one of several Illinois College students and professors who presented a program of readings and music Monday for Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah), an international day observed annually to remember the 6 million Jews who died in the Nazi Holocaust during World War II.
