Illinois College to dedicate Liberty Tree

In celebration of the First Amendment, Illinois College will be dedicating a Liberty Tree at Starhill Forest Arboretum in Petersburg on Wednesday, April 23, at 10 a.m.

The dedication,“The Seasons of Liberty,” will be a time to reflect on the significance for American democracy and freedom that the Liberty Tree symbolizes. This, along with other First Amendment events at Illinois College, have been funded by a grant from the McCormick Foundation, the 1 for All Campus Initiative.

The Liberty Tree that will be dedicated is an Osage orange, also commonly called a hedge apple. The arboretum dates the tree back to 1929 which is the same year Illinois College celebrated its centennial anniversary.

The partnership between Illinois College and Starhill Forest Arboretum began in 2008. “Guy and Edie Sternberg, founders of Starhill, have provided opportunities for students and faculty, and their expertise and generosity are allowing this wonderful event to reach fruition.” Adrienne Hacker Daniels, professor of communication and rhetorical studies, says.
