“I feel an Illinois College education is the quintessential liberal arts experience because it exposes people to different academic courses that they may or may not have chosen on their own. I feel that my own educational experience at Illinois College put me on a path of continuous learning, and this path was full of transitions that often took me into unexpected areas of interest. I started my academic path at IC as a history major, but the more I studied history, I saw the strong interconnections with politics. So I started taking political science classes and ended up with a double major and a secondary education teaching certificate. I also was fortunate enough to spend a semester abroad in Denmark. The passion for teaching and the willingness and wanting-ness to travel, led me to the Philippines as a Peace Corps volunteer. After a master’s degree and a year working in Sudan, I ended up in Washington, D.C. When I look back at how I got to where I am today, I thank Illinois College for exposing me to different classes, ideas and ways of thinking.”
