IC junior looks to RISE to the occasion this summer

Illinois College junior Anne Aiello of Springfield, Ill., will be in Germany this summer taking part in RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering), an internship program for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering.

“I am so excited to have this opportunity,” Aiello says. “This internship through the RISE program is absolutely perfect for me, as I will gain valuable experience in both my major (biochemistry) and minor (German).”

RISE offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of two to three months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students to assist in research. All scholarship holders receive stipends from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutions provide housing assistance.

At Illinois College Aiello has been mainly involved in organic chemistry research with chemistry professor Brent Chandler. Through the RISE program Aiello will get to use her knowledge in organic chemistry, as well as molecular biology and biochemistry.

“This will bring together all my major courses,” Aiello says.“This internship will also give me a chance to do research in a completely new environment. I will gain new skills and opportunities that are completely different than what I have seen here at Illinois College.”

Aiello is also looking forward to her first trip out of the country and to experience everything Germany has to offer. “I have studied the German culture for years and I've always had a desire to experience it first hand, so I am eager to be right in the middle of it,” Aiello says. “There is so much history and tradition in Germany, not to mention having a chance to be a part of the German tradition that is science.”

On a personal and professional level Chandler fully expects this experience to be transformational for Aiello.

“The internship is an opportunity for Anne to truly apply her liberal arts education,” Chandler says. “She gets to take part in world class research while immersing herself in the German language and culture.”

Aiello adds, “I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet so many talented scientists, and make connections and memories that will stay with me forever.”
